The Education Support Specialist will work closely with FoodChain’s Director of Education and Outreach to develop new educational materials for programs such as Summer Food Service Program, Nourish Lexington, virtual education, SNACKS, Power of Produce, and tabling events. In addition, they will assist in evaluation of educational programs including data collection and analysis, and will lead hands-on cooking classes. Reports directly to the Director of Education and Outreach. 


Job Responsibilities

  • Create weekly education packets for the Nourish Lexington program that focus on seasonal ingredients, Kentucky farms, history of cuisine, and hands-on activities for kids and families
  • Work with the Director of Education and Outreach to plan, recruit, and lead cooking classes partnering with local schools to provide in-person instruction. These classes are designed to increase kitchen confidence, explain seasonality of local ingredients, and explore personal food preferences 
  • Attend monthly education meetings to discuss goals, plans, and tasks to develop educational offerings
  • Work with the Director of Education and Outreach to create digital content as it pertains to the virtual education platform. This includes instructional videos, print out activities, and blog entries
  • Work with the Director of Education and Outreach on curriculum development for different programs and connections to state standards when possible (Cook. Eat. Grow., Classroom Aquaponics Program, Summer Food Service Program, Farm Tours, etc.)
  • Assist at outreach and tabling events, interacting with students, parents, adults, etc.
  • Organize and maintain our catalog of tabling and outreach materials
  • Assist volunteers and interns with educational projects 



Job Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to work with diverse populations; sensitive to folks with barriers to employment
  • A passion for local food and finding long term solutions to the complexity of food system issues
  • Upon hire, obtain the Health Department Food Handler’s License or ServSafe Certification
  • Established, excellent food safety track record
  • Required to shadow and co-teach before leading cooking classes; expected availability between 3pm-6pm 
  • Experience working in an educational setting, especially with individuals with limited-resources and barriers to employment (preferred)
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle for transportation and travel to offsite locations 
  • Upon hire, background check will be required 
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred
  • Associate Degree, Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Agriculture, Dietetics, Food Science or related field or experience equivalent
